The team created a catalogue of all the mutations in the genomes of the 21 breast cancer genomes. They identified entirely new mutational processes that drive breast cancer development, including one remarkable process defined by localized regions of hypermutation found in most of the breast cancers. This phenomenon has never been seen before. They also found that, once many mutations have accumulated in a cell, the cell then diverges into different subgroups, one of which is destined to become the aggressive, dominant, breast cancer tumor. These findings have implications for our understanding of how breast cancers develop over the decades before diagnosis in adults. (Source: ScienceDaily Headlines)

Dr. Catheryn Yashar has been leading a study that covers four years of 50 patients experiences with the SAVI breast brachytherapy device. Her team presented their research recently at th...

Conclusion This case-control study provides evidence that a type of molecular modification (methylation) at a particular genetic site may be associated with an increased risk of developing breast cancer. The researchers said that the identification of a white blood cell DNA methylation marker for breast cancer is quite useful because it can be detected through assessing a simple blood sample, as opposed to the extraction of tissue samples that is often needed to identify cancer markers. This study had several strengths, including: The case-control study was “nested” from three large, independent cohort studies. Nesting is a process were participants are taken from existing studies so that researchers can examine details of their histories that have been formally recorded at the time...

Researchers say women who have a mother or sister diagnosed with breast cancer or other risk factors should have their first mammograms earlier. After several years of upheaval over the best way to conduct breast cancer screening, researchers are working to find clarity over when women should begin getting mammograms, how often and at what cost. A pair of new studies clears up some of the uncertainty by finding that women who have a mother or sister diagnosed with breast cancer, or those who have unusually dense breast tissue, should have their first test at age 40 and repeat the exam at least once every other year. Researchers discover association between risk of the disease and a molecular change in a particular white blood cell geneThe possibility of developing a simple blood test to help identify women most at risk from breast cancer has been raised after researchers discovered a strong association between risk of the disease and a molecular change in a particular white blood cell gene.Scientists funded by the Breast Cancer Campaign analysed blood samples from 1,380 women of various ages, 640 of whom went on to develop breast cancer. They found a strong association between molecular modification of a white blood cell gene called ATM and breast cancer risk. The scientists looked for evidence of a chemical effect called methylation, which "switches" genes on and off.Women showing the highest methylati...
